A Collaborative Breeding Strategy for Organic Potatoes in the Netherlands Organic Eprints

The ability of the organic farmer’s agronomic toolbox to reduce the susceptibility of a potato crop to late blight is limited, certainly under the Dutch climatic conditions. Conventional breeding programs do not generate either a sufficient number nor appropriate types of resistant varieties for organic systems; and a separate breeding program for the limited area of organic potato production is simply not viable. Therefore, all concerned forces have joined together in an umbrella program called Bioimpuls for organic potato improvement.

As environmental and agronomic conditions are heterogeneous between and within locations, diversity within varieties or crop populations should increase adaptability to the changing and variable range of growing environments. The additional pressure of plant genetic diversity loss, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity and ensuring a “wider adaptation” capacity for crop varieties (Döring et al., 2011). Breeding for specific bioregions: a genotype by environment study of horticultural and nutritional traits integrating breeder and farmer priorities for organic broccoli cultivar improvement Organic Eprints

The genotype by environment interaction study of broccoli, amongst others demonstrates that traits of a cultivar are sometimes ranked differently when grown in an organic production system compared to a conventional system. This has strong implications for breeding strategies. The breeders interviewed acknowledged that more attention on abiotic and biotic stress resistance in a broccoli breeding programme is needed which is in accordance with the farmers' varietal requirements. To determine if present commercial broccoli cultivars meet the diverse needs of organic management systems, such as adaptation to low N input, mechanical weed management, and no chemical pesticide use, and to propose the selection environments for crop improvement for organic production, we compared horticultural trait performance of 23 broccoli cultivars (G) under two management (M) systems (organic and conventional) in two regions of the United States (Oregon and Maine), including spring and fall trials. The project CO-FREE (2012-2016) aimed to develop strategies to replace/reduce copper use in organic, integrated and conventional farming. CO-FREE alternative test products (CTPs) were tested and integrated together with decision support systems, disease-tolerant varieties, and innovative breeding goals (ideotypes) into improved management strategies. Crop traits relevant for selecting potato genotypes adapted to low nitrogen availability Organic Eprints

Canopy cover development was measured for 6 to 18 different potato varieties, under 3 different nitrogen regimes. This canopy cover development can be expressed in several paramaters. Of these parameters, the 'Area Under Cover Progress Curve' and the 'percentage of maximal ground cover' show the highest correlation with the final yield in low-nitogen conditions.

The need for increased sustainability of performance in cereal varieties, particularly in organic agriculture (OA), is limited by the lack of varieties adapted to organic conditions. Here, the needs for breeding are reviewed in the context of three major marketing types, global, regional, local, in European OA. Currently, the effort is determined, partly, by the outcomes from trials that compare varieties under OA and CA (conventional agriculture) conditions. Is er een voordeel te behalen als de selectie van uien voor de biologische teelt ook onder biologische omstandigheden gebeurt, in vergelijking met gangbare selectieomstandigheden? Deze vraag is opgepakt met twee brede basispopulaties (Ronde Rijnsburger Groep en Platte Groep) en het zaadvaste ras Balstora. Er is een trend zichtbaar dat biologische selecties onder biologische omstandigheden een betere opbrengst geven, en gangbare selecties onder gangbare omstandigheden.

Enhancing Resilience Through Plant Breeding Requires an Integrated and Interdisciplinary Approach Organic Eprints

Breeding in the organic sector is not only a technical activity improving certain desired variety traits but breeding priorities are also determined by the organizational system based on cultural values anchored in specific socio-economic and legal constructions. So, if we want to stimulate breeding for a regionally diverse assortment of varieties of crops that both enhances short-term needed productivity and long-term improved resilience within the frame of the organic principles of health, ecology, fairness and care, we will need to address both the technical and organizational aspects in an integrated and interdisciplinary approach.

When it comes to discussions on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and organic agriculture, biotechnologists often ask: “Why are your rules so strict? Why ban GMOs when they are the only tool to secure the world’s future need for food? They are more efficient, quicker, etc!” When asked these questions I explain the underlying values of organic agriculture. In this article I will discuss the basic values of organic agriculture as laid down in the IFOAM four basic principles, and will relate them to the field of plant breeding. I also discuss the consequences and challenges for the further development of organic plant breeding.

Seed is the basis of food crops, and thus for products in shops, and comes with a long history. Plant breeding is developing rapidly, a fact that raises questions among growers, shopkeepers and consumers. In 2015, for the first time European patents were granted to companies for plant varieties and native plant traits, such as for a tomato variety with more healthy substances and a bell pepper variety that is resistant to pest insects. These patents have caused strong social indignation: the free exchange of seeds and plant material with these advantageous qualities is blocked by these patents. The question often raised is how much does plant breeding for the organic sector differ from modern plant breeding and does a ban on GMO also include refraining from molecular marker assisted selection (MAS)? In this paper I will first elaborate on the values in organic agriculture and it related systems approach as a central focus in organic agriculture and will then discuss in which way molecular marker assisted selection can be of use for plant breeding for organic and low-input agriculture.

Get a taste of new talented Robust potato cultivars Organic Eprints

In the Netherlands the organic sector keeps growing, but organic potato production is lagging behind. This is due to the relatively high disease pressure from Phytophthora infestans, which causes foliage and tuber late blight. For organic potato growers this disease still forms a major cropping risk. In the potato breeding programme Bioimpuls, the Louis Bolk Institute and Wageningen UR are working together with breeding companies and farmer-breeders to develop robust cultivars that are resistant to Phytophthora. Thanks to these new cultivars, organic growers now have more chance of yield security. Green Breeding: Bioimpuls Programme 2009-2013 - Perspectives on Phytophthora-resistant potato varieties Organic Eprints

The heavy outbreaks of Phytophthora in 2007, and again in 2012, reconfirmed the need for resistant potato varieties for the organic sector. Until recently no such varieties were available. In 2009 the Bioimpulsprogramme was launched to give more priority to breeding organic, Phytophthora-resistant varieties. In this 10-year programme, wild potato species are crossed with cultivated potato to develop new resistant varieties. Although this classical breeding strategy is a long road, the advantage is that you can select for multiple traits along the way. This brochure presents the results of the first four years of the programme.

Groene Veredeling: Lupineveredeling voor kalkrijke bodems - Onderzoek naar perspectiefvolle lijnen Organic Eprints

Lupine (Lupinus spp) trekt belangstelling van zowel biologische als gangbare akkerbouwers die zoeken naar een vlinderbloemig gewas om hun vruchtwisseling te verruimen. In 2010 en 2011 zijn eerste verkenningen uitgevoerd met respectievelijk 30 en 57 kalktolerante witte lupinelijnen van de Deense veredelaar Jørnsgård. Sommige lijnen leken geschikt qua kalktolerantie, vroegheid en opbrengst. In 2012 kon het onderzoek onder het programma Groene Veredeling breder worden opgezet en zijn naast de lijnen van Deense herkomst ook lijnen van de Nederlands veredelaar Van Mierlo meegenomen in vier veldproeven, zowel gangbaar als biologisch. Groene Veredeling: Nieuwe rassen voor verduurzaming van gangbare en biologische teelt Organic Eprints

Biologische telers hebben grote behoefte aan meer robuuste rassen. Dat kunnen rassen zijn met een brede weerstand tegen ziekten en plagen, rassen die met minder bemesting toch voldoende opbrengst geven, en rassen die zijn aangepast aan veranderende klimaatomstandigheden. De ontwikkeling van dergelijke robuuste rassen is voor de hele agrarische sector van belang. Robuuste rassen dragen namelijk bij aan verdere verduurzaming van zowel gangbare als biologische teelt. In het onderzoeksprogramma Groene Veredeling dragen Wageningen UR, het Louis Bolk Instituut en andere kennisinstellingen sinds 2010 bij aan de ontwikkeling van deze robuuste rassen. De gangbare en de biologische spinazieteelt lopen tegen dezelfde problemen aan die een duurzame teelt in de weg staan. Met name aanpassing aan lage stikstofgehaltes in de bodem en ontwikkeling van duurzame resistentie tegen valse meeldauw of ‘wolf’ (Peronospora farinosa). Veredelingsresultaten van de afgelopen jaren en plannen voor de komende jaren worden besproken.
